Introduction

My Name is Jason Stockford.  I have created this blog as part of the requirements for EDC 525 at URI for the fall 2016 semester.  I am currently a professor of Mathematics at CCRI and I am taking this class for professional development purposes.

I am currently teaching a full load and then some (eight classes this term) and one of them is an online/distance learning class.  With regard to the online class, it has been a learning experience.  When I was in college there weren't as many options to take online courses, so it is a challenge to teach a course when one has a lack of experience from the student perspective.

One thing which is challenging, but fruitful in this class is the use of free online blogs.   In my teaching experience I have used programs such as Sakai, Blackboard, and My Math Lab; however, I have not used a blog for teaching or learning purposes.

For those who are interested, here are a few links to the relevant info for my online course:

  3. Jay your off to a great start. I can't image that work load of teaching yet. Is teaching math tough online?

    1. Teaching Math can be easy or tough depending on the students and what you get yourself into. The good thing about Math is that it is black and white. What it really comes down to is the maturity of your students.

  4. Jason, I give you a lot of credit teaching 8 classes and taking this class. I agree with you that this is a whole new experience in learning. My undergraduate was in business and psychology. It took me 10 years to complete my degree as I had to work full time and go to school at night. Boy would I have loved taking classes online. Many of my classes have been on Webex, which I love as it is f2f but in the comfort of your own home. I am learning a lot in this class but find it very time consuming. What are your feelings on students taking math tests via math lab? Do you feel they do better because it is essentially open book? I have to say, just reading your syllabus brought me back to my younger years when math scared the heck out of me. Thanks for sharing. Chris

  6. Hi Jason,
You have a pretty rigorous syllabus. It was interesting to see that you use Khan Academy too. We have used that in the past but subscribe to IXL now. Have you tried that?

    1. I haven't tried IXL. I use khan academy as a reference for the students. I like their site because I know the material presented is correct since it is done by experts and not any old person on the web :-)

  7. Thanks for all of the positive comments. I have been playing around with some additions over the last few days. Once I get them set I will make them live.
